How to Fit Wall Lights
Vilera Design guide for UK homes
Wall lights are an elegant way to enhance your home lighting. At Vilera Design, our wall lights combine modern British style with timeless craftsmanship to add depth and atmosphere to any room.
Why install wall lights
- Save space compared with table or floor lamps.
- Create soft, ambient lighting for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways.
- Highlight artwork, mirrors, or architectural features.
- Match your decor with designer finishes and minimalist designs.
Step by step: how to fit wall lights
1. Plan your lighting layout
- Decide the function of each light such as accent, reading, or mood.
- Measure and mark positions before drilling.
- Typical mounting height is about 150 to 170 cm from finished floor level.
- For multiple fittings on one wall, keep roughly 2.5 to 3 m between units for balanced illumination.
Designer tip: place wall lights symmetrically on either side of a mirror, headboard, or doorway for a refined look.
2. Turn off the power
- Isolate the circuit at your consumer unit or fuse box.
- Confirm isolation with a voltage tester before touching any conductors.
3. Mount the bracket
- Use a spirit level to mark straight fixing points.
- Drill pilot holes and insert suitable wall plugs for plasterboard, brick, or block.
- Fix the mounting plate firmly so there is no movement.
4. Wire the light
Follow UK wiring colour codes:
- Brown is live.
- Blue is neutral.
- Green and Yellow is earth.
- Strip about 5 mm of insulation from each conductor.
- Insert into the correct terminals and tighten fully.
- Ensure there are no loose strands or exposed copper.
If in doubt, hire a qualified electrician. This is essential for bathrooms and outdoor locations.
5. Attach and test
- Secure the light body to the bracket and check it is level.
- Insert a compatible bulb that does not exceed the rated wattage.
- Restore power and test operation at the switch.
UK regulations and safety
- Electrical work must comply with Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales.
- Bathroom zones and external installations may require Building Control notification.
- Incorrect DIY wiring can affect insurance cover and safety.
All Vilera Design wall lights meet UK electrical standards and include clear installation guidance.
